Small Batch Olive Oil specialises in high antioxidant olive oils from small producers. The aim is to provide an olive oil that is high in health benefits, to give your body a small help each day in its natural process of healing or just staying healthy. While other people focus on the taste - our focus is on sourcing the best oilve oil for your health - which means organic, no pesticides or herbicides, and the highest levels of antioxidants or active polyphenols we can find.

But going back to taste - Olive oil should taste like it came from olives - and have herbacious characters and some good pepperiness so that its a sensory experience when you use it, - and it's a moment in the day when you reflect on nature and that it came from an olive tree. Ideally its the opposite of the tasteless oils with no sensory experience from industrial scale farms (which also use pesticides) that is generally available in supermarkets.

The olive oil is sourced from smaller organic producers in WA depending on who / where has the highest polyphenol level oil in a particular season or year. The olive oil typically has a phlyphenol level of 400+ mg/kg.

 

About Me

My journey with olive oil began over ten years ago. After reading about the health benefits of high-polyphenol olive oil, I set out to find the best oils available here in Western Australia. The search led me to small growers—usually family-run groves with a focus on organic practices.  It was from doing this that I began to really appreciate the peppery "burn" that high polyphenol oil has - and there was no going back to supermarket oil. 

Some years later, my daughter began having health issues. They were difficult times. And one of the hardest things to stay positive, but we chose to believe that each small improvement, even if temporary, was helping her body slowly find its balance again.  But the experience stayed with me. It made me want to make high-polyphenol olive oil more accessible—to anyone who might benefit from it. People who might be suffering or not have the time to explore numerous olive groves like I had. I wanted the process to be simple, reliable, and stress-free: High-quality oil delivered directly to your door without hassle.

I also started to appreciate the mental aspect of health, and the importance of a mental association of where something came from. The opposite of nebulous supermarket oil.  Hopefully when you smell and taste the oil you have a sensory experience, and feel that link back to nature and the olive tree it came from. The oil is also fresh which helps!

Also along the way, I became involved in judging the olive oil awards here in WA. Its a long couple of days tasting countless oils, but it has  really helped me sharpen my  judgement, and to know when I came across an exceptional oil. It also  helped me refine exactly what I want to offer.

Can Olive Oil Help Protect Your Brain As You Age?

A new study published in the journal Microbiome followed 656 older adults over a two-year period and examined the relationship between olive oil consumption, gut bacteria and cognitive function.

Researchers found that people who consumed more virgin olive oil tended to maintain better cognitive function over time. They also had a more diverse gut microbiome, which is increasingly being recognised as an important part of the connection between gut health and brain health.

Interestingly, the benefits were strongest for virgin olive oil, which naturally contains higher levels of polyphenols and other bioactive compounds that are largely removed during refining.

The researchers concluded that higher polyphenol olive oil consumption was associated with better preservation of cognitive function, possibly through positive effects on the gut microbiome.

While no single food is a magic bullet, studies like this continue to highlight why traditional Mediterranean diets rich in high-quality extra virgin olive oil are associated with healthy ageing.

Why High Antioxidant Olive Oil

The Mediterranean diet's healthy effects can be attributed not only to the relationship between unsaturated and saturated fatty acids in olive oil but also to the antioxidant property of its phenolic compounds.

The main phenolic compounds, hydroxytyrosol and oleuropein, which give extra-virgin olive oil its bitter, pungent taste, have been linked to a lower risk of numerous diseases (1) as well as increased longevity (2).

Unfortunately many of the olive oils in supermarkets are low in these healthy antioxidants. Our focus is on grower direct olive oil with the highest antioxidant levels we can find.

Typically the oil has on average three to four times the phenolic (antioxidant) levels of the larger supermarket brands.
